MY BODY DIDN’T GLOW in the aftermath, it hummed with the energy of a newly awakened libido. But that’s not what pulled me from my sleep.

There was darkness seeping into my soul.

‘Neverly,’ I heard my name called from the quiet in Dex’s bedroom.

I must be somewhere between sleeping and alertness.

‘Neverly’

Again, that time I heard it clearly and looked to the left of me, nothing, and then to the right, but nothing. Where was it coming from?

‘Neverly’

Okay, this was freaking me out. I sat up and stared straight into a horror movie.

They stood at the foot of the bed, both registering grim expressions with blood seeping from gaping wounds in their heads. An anguished cry sputtered out of me; what was going on? Was I having a nightmare, or was this real?

Geoff moved in the same disjointed way as Heather and was at my side in a blink. His mouth fell open as a deep moan came out, and his cold, bluish hand came to rest on my right temple.

A flash of light blinded me, and there I was back on campus, in the little shed, hands tied behind my back and duct tape over my mouth.

This was how Geoff died; this is how that monster took his next victim. Now, I was about to feel the pain that he felt. Why did he think I needed to know this?

“So, you’re one of Professor Moore’s favorite students,” a bitter laugh followed. “You know, you trying to find out who I am, wasn’t your brightest idea. It’s a shame, now that you know my true identity; I can’t let you live,” he chuckled, “Not that anyone would believe you.”

“I wondered how you found out, even thought about tearing it out of you, but it doesn’t matter. You’ll take that knowledge to your grave as I resume my true quest.” The sound of metal dragging over the dirt floor heightened my senses, “I’ve been on this earth for more years than I care to remember. But, in all those years, there’s only one thing that made me feel alive, and that was death.” He bent down, “I remember my first kill, even though it was centuries ago. It was the vessel that bore me life,” I heard his lips smack together as if he were reminiscing about a beautiful memory.

I strained to see his face, but all I saw were his tattered dark pants and his left hand, and I noticed something on his ring finger. I couldn’t make it out, but it was some sort of tattoo, small, but still, it was there.

The shadows played along the dilapidated walls as light from the moon filtered inside. My gaze shifted to the corner of the room where Heather stood. She was at my; I mean Geoff’s side as the shadows moved and took his hand.

The movement was swift as the shovel came down, but there was no pain, thanks to Heather sheltering Geoff from the blow that ended his life.

Questions flew through my head, and I was back in Dex’s bedroom as both Heather and Geoff were trying to tell me something.
